2012 Winnipeg Emperors Hockey Club Season Summary

The Winnipeg Emperors Hockey Club began the season with an evaluation skate in November of 2012 where interest in the club grew by doubling the numbers of last year’s team.  With the increased numbers, the club formed two squads titled A Squad (upper) and B squad (lower) to participate in the 2012 Asian Hockey Championships during the Victoria Day long weekend in Toronto,ON.

A Squad

This squad competed in the Upper Rec division of the tournament.  After decisive victories in the first and second games in which they won 4-0 and 10-3 respectively, they met Arashi Jr. in Game 3 of round robin play to decide 1st place in the division..  Arashi Jr. jumped out to an early 5-0 lead which shocked Squad A as they never trailed in earlier games.  After a late game push in which Squad A scored 4 goals, they ran out of time and suffered their first defeat with a final score of 5-4.

At this point the tournament organizers took the top 4 teams from the Upper Rec Division and created a new division called Lower Intermediate for playoffs.  Squad A would once again meet Arashi Jr. in the semi-finals.  Arashi Jr. played a solid 2 way game in which they defeated Squad A with a final score of 4-0.  Arashi Jr. would go on to win the championships of this division.

Squad A’s Richard Mao (2x), goalie Mark Galang and defenseman Lou Chang earned hard hat awards for their efforts in the games played.  Scotty Yeung and Richard Mao led offensively for the team with forwards Ryan Tsang and Sean O’Neil playing a hard 2 way game and being defensively responsible.

Game 1: Win vs. Rondeau: 4-0.
Game 2: Win vs.N’Saiyanz 10-3
Game 3: Loss vs. Arashi Jr 5-0  then 5-4,
Game 4: Lower Intermediate Semifinals Loss vs. Arashi Jr. 4-0

B Squad

Squad B competed in the Entry Level division of the tournament. After falling flat to the Gong Hei Phat Boyz from Ottawa in their first game, they came back to win in game 2 vs Bamboo.  The third game ended in a tie against last year’s champions Zero Fighers.  In Squad B’s first playoff game they exacted revenge and were able to top the Gong Hei Phat Boyz with a win.  Their next game would be tough loss in the semi finals in which they wered downed 3-1 by the Wellcare Flyers who would eventually go on to win the division.

This squad played a grinding game with a defense first mindset and stellar goaltending from Anthony Battad. Squad B captain Stanley Eng led by example, defenseman Aaron Lam led offensively from his blue line and strong efforts by Kim Tsang, Tommy Dao and and Henry Tat were shown throughout the tournament.

Game 1: lost 3-0 to Gong Hei Phat Boyz
Game 2: Won 5-2 against Bamboo
Game 3: Tied 1-1 against zero fighters
Game 4: playoff game – Won 3-1 against Gong Hei Phat Boyz
Game 5: playoff game – lost 3-1 to Flyers(I think)

The focus now shifts to the 2013 Asian Hockey Championships which takes place May 17-19 in Toronto, ON.  The club will hold an evaluation skate for all those interested in participating in October.
